Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave is an effective non-surgical, non-invasive treatment which is used for fast pain relief and mobility restoration.
Through acoustic waves generated by the Shockwave machine, it begins a cascade of biological effects which effectively treat stubborn, chronic musculoskeletal conditions.
Shockwave therapy is a safe, affordable and effective treatment which is conducted in the clinic.
Mechanism of action
Increase in blood supply
It is fundamental to have rich, nutritious, oxygenated blood flow to achieve healing in damaged tissue structures. Through the energy of the acoustic waves, capillary micro-rupture occurs in the musculoskeletal tissue. As a result of the micro-ruptures, the arterioles are remolded, promoting the growth of new blood vessels. These new blood vessels can supply the damage tissue with the rich, highly oxygenated blood it requires for healing.
Trigger Collagen production
It is vital to have an adequate amount of collagen when healing musculoskeletal structures. Shockwave has been proven to accelerate the production and rearrange the structure integrity of tendons. Fibres are manipulated into a longitudinal formation which creates a stronger tendon, due to the increased density.
Reduction of pain receptors
‘Substance P’ informs the central nervous system of any pain messages. Depletion of substance P occurs through the acoustic waves which reduces neurogenic inflammation. Decreasing the meditation of substance P lowers the stimulation of afferent nociceptive fibres and therefore lessens the pain.
Release of trigger points found in the lower extremities
The release of the calcium pump allows the breakdown of the nodule and realign of the muscle fibres.
Break down of scar tissue and calcium deposits
As a result of micro-tears or trauma calcific tendinitis can occur from a buildup of calcium deposit. The extracorporeal shockwave acoustic waves break down the calcification build up. The biochemical decalcification fragments will be drained through the lymphatic system.
Reversal of chronic inflammation
The inflammatory pathway is restored through the activation of mast cells and production of chemokines and cytokines.
Treatment
You will need a course of treatment weekly for 4 to 6 weeks. You should notice a reduction of pain immediately following the treatment, with the full benefits continuing for 2-3 months.
